What our educators thought
“Our book club consisted of all boys on this occasion and the Graphic Novel style with less text and lots of colourful pictures definitely suited them but this story would appeal to girls as well. Particularly with the female main character. This would also be great for reluctant readers to help them progress from picture books to longer stories. The children in our book club particularly liked the ‘dynamic duo’ of Shirley and her cockroach friend, George.
There are some subtle references to fairy tales which I enjoyed – it was a very creative clever plot, with a lot of funny and ‘quirky’ moments and a fast pace which keeps the reader engaged. There is some vocabulary that younger members of the group needed support with but this opened up good discussions. Some intense moments also offered great opportunities to talk about feelings and emotions. This book would be a good stimulus for adventure/quest story writing and the incredible characters definitely offer opportunities for exploration in the classroom.”
