Get ready for a stunning journey through the moon’s phases from one beautifully illustrated habit to another, discovering amazing nocturnal creatures and their antics. Britta Teckentrup and Patricia Hegarty have done it again in creating a stunning cut out book. If you loved Bee and Tree, you will most certainly fall in love with this new book, too!
From end page to end page, this book is just delightful. We begin with a new moon, then wax and wane through the pages and the night, ending with a sunrise. Patricia Hegarty’s delicious vocabulary choices will intrigue and engage young readers. I love the verb choices that reveal creature traits and describe the natural phenomena beautifully. The rhyme gently takes you through the book, linking each setting seamlessly.
Britta Teckentrup’s illustrations are truly magical. I just love the darkness, softly lit with stunning moonlight. It’s a wonderful book to share in dimmed light at bedtime. The metallic moons really come in to their own. As you pore over each page (which you really should), you will spot more and more, from scorpions to tree frogs, and fireflies to spiderwebs.
The night time antics of each creature just make me want to find out more. I’m sure this book will spark questions and wonderings in many a young reader, prompting lots of book to book fun! This book could be used well to link with learning on about the moon and nocturnal animals, as well as habits or animal migrations.
My favourite pages are the puffins and jelly fish. I just love them. Simply stunning!
