About Andy Stanton

Andy Stanton studied English at Oxford but they kicked him out. Before becoming a children’s writer he was a film script reader, a market researcher, an NHS lackey, a part-time sparrow and a grape. He is best known for the hilarious, bestselling and award-winning Mr Gum series and has also written picture books, including Danny McGee Drinks the Sea. Andy lives in North London and likes cartoons, books and music (even jazz).

What to expect from the event

If you’re already familiar with my work, you’ll know that my books are very silly, very surreal and very playful. Underneath the surface, however, I’m incredibly serious about reading and writing, and my events are a reflection of this.

My talks are energetic, engaging and interactive, full of jokes, props, silly voices and horrible, horrible singing. At the same time, I’m careful to smuggle some inspirational and serious stuff in there too and I aim to light a fire of enthusiasm beneath even the most reluctant reader.

I love to improvise and work with audiences and to turn each event into a unique and special experience for all concerned. I’ve been doing this for around fifteen years now, and have performed at hundreds of schools and festivals in the UK and beyond.

About the Book

Book title: You’re a Bad Man, Mr Gum

Shabba me whiskers! MR GUM is 20 years old (and some). And he’s NOT happy about it.

But everyone else is – and this very special anniversary edition of the bestselling children’s classic is bursting out the nostrils with fun and original extras from the Mr Gum world. Including an introduction from fellow bestselling author, Phil Earle!

‘It’s time for action,’ said Mr Gum to nobody in particular. ‘Nasty action.’

Good evening. Mr Gum is a complete horror who hates children, animals, fun and corn on the cob. This book’s all about him. And an angry fairy who lives in his bathtub. And Jake the dog, and a little girl called Polly. And there’s heroes and sweets and adventures and EVERYTHING.

You’re a Bad Man, Mr Gum! is the first book in the internationally best-selling series by Andy Stanton, which has won everything from the Blue Peter Book Award (twice) to the Roald Dahl Funny Prize and the Red House Children’s Book Award.
