Alan, King of the Universe

What the book club told us about the book:

This is one of our favourite type of books – a graphic novel! Alan is a cat who has a sidekick called Fido, who is a dog. Alan thinks that he is the smartest ‘person’ in the world – but he is not! He comes up with crazy schemes to be the King of the Universe. He tries to clone himself, tries to make loads of money by winning the Olympics and tries to be a top-class chef. Each chapter, and there are only 5, is a new scheme to try and take over the world. You will have to read it to see if he can take over the universe! Read this if you like Cat Kid, Investigators and Dogman.

Our School Review

What our pupils thought

“This is a really funny book and I really enjoyed it. I liked the fact that the speech bubbles were in different colours to show who was speaking. This made it easy to follow.”

“This is a weird book but in a good way! My favourite character was Alan as he thought he was smart but he was not! Alan is quite a dramatic character.”

“I enjoyed this book. I liked that in each chapter Alan is trying to do something to take over the world. Alan tells Fido what to do but then changes it, sometimes for the better!”

About the book club:

We haven't had a book club for a long time so when this opportunity came up, I jumped at the chance! I chose 6 children who love graphic novels and have read a wide range so seemed very qualified to review this new one! They have already asked what their next book will be and so we will be continuing with our club. The idea is that they will then go back to class and share the books which will stay in the classroom.

What our educators thought

“Graphic novels are a big hit with the children in our school and this one will be no different. Alan has these wild ideas to take over the world and I love his sidekick, Fido! He is the real brains behind the operation and they have a great relationship. The speech is really clear to follow with the different colour speech bubbles and there are some super illustrations that are detailed and add to the story. There was a real buzz with the children reading this book and sharing what had happened in each chapter. It was good that each chapter was a different short story. This book would be suitable from year 2-4. It has an easy to follow structure, clear text and pictures and will make children laugh out loud.”
