What our pupils thought

“Mizzy is a girl with Down Syndrome who doesn’t let that stop her achieving her dream of being a detective. When she visits her aunt’s house she finds some intriguing diaries that lead her to find out more about her great aunt…. I enjoyed this book because it’s very mysterious! Mizzy can be very funny. I really liked the front cover because its very detailed and intriguing and made me want to read it. I would recommend this book to people who like murder mystery books. I give this book 5 stars!”

“This book is about a girl called Mizzy who dreams of being a detective. When she goes to her aunt and uncle’s house for the summer, the finds out that her Great Aunt Jane has died in what she thinks are mysterious circumstances and now she wants to try and prove herself to her family so that she can become a detective and solve the mystery. My favourite character in this book is Oli because at first he was mean and arrogant but as I read on he became a completely different person. I thought he was very inspiring because no matter how mean or rude someone is they can always have a change of heart. I give this book a five out of five.”

“This book is about a girl called Mizzy who has Down Syndrome but doesn’t ever let that stop her from trying to be a detective. She takes a visit to her aunt’s house for what should be a normal holiday but which turns into a whole upside down mystery which she is very eager to solve. My favourite character is Mizzy because even though she’s different in multiple ways that doesn’t stop her from becoming who she is. I rate this book 5 stars! In my opinion Mizzy is truly incredible and an inspiration to all!”

“This book is about a girl called Mizzy who has Down Syndrome but she doesn’t let that get in the way when solving mysteries. When she goes to her aunt and uncle’s house for the summer she discovers her great aunt Jane’s diaries in the wardrobe and it seems the summer might not be as boring as she expected. My favourite character is Ollie because I think he’s kind and funny. It’s an inspiring book because it’s a message that anyone can do anything if they put their mind to it. I give this book five out of five stars.”

“Family secrets never stay hidden….. There has been a murder in Mizzy’s family and she will be the one to figure it out. This is an incredibly funny story about a child with Down Syndrome called Mizzy, who finds and pieces together evidence about how murdered Aunt Jane. I think this book is suitable for ages 8 – 13. Unlike most mystery books this one kept the tension all the way through; from twists and turns to tremendous emotion. In my opinion Mizzy truly is marvellous.”

“This is about a girl called Mizzy who is staying with her cousins for the summer. She loves solving mysteries but she can’t find a proper one no matter what she does – then one falls right in her lap. Mizzy has Down Syndrome but she doesn’t let that be her personality. In the book she thinks everyone treats her like a baby but she knows she is not. I give this book 4 and a half stars.”

About the book club:

Our school reading club is called The Lyons Reading Den and currently includes members from Year 4 and Year 6. We meet on a Monday after school for cookies and a blether about what books we're reading and why we love them, followed by acting out scenes from a picture book and paired reading. Year 6 reviewed The Mizzy Mysteries.

What our educators thought

“Our Reading Den were so enthusiastic about reading this book! Most loved the mystery genre already but one child hadn’t read a mystery novel before and said that this book got him hooked! They also liked the illustrations that run throughout the book – especially the family tree.

They really engaged with the character of Mizzy, embracing the idea of a story from the perspective of a child with Down Syndrome – none of them had ever encountered this before and wondered why they didn’t encounter it more often in stories .

This book would be a brilliant addition to any school library or classroom wanting to incorporate a greater variety of diversity in their books. There is also an amazing audiobook version for children who find it easier to listen.

Educators should be aware that the main character has Down Syndrome and that there is mention of a family member dying. The story also deals with a lot of emotions as Mizzy navigates both herself and her cousins becoming teenagers.

I personally loved the positive message of the story, finding it both an uplifting and compelling whodunnit. I would personally recommend this book for ages 8 to12.”
