What the book club told us about the book:

In this breathtaking adventure, Zélie and Jules face a deadly race to solve a family mystery and a vicious crime that stretches from the jungles of Calcutta to the sewers of Paris. Zélie is often accused of being a witch, but she doesn't believe in magic. Until Jules climbs up from the reeking Parisian sewer and hands Zélie the golden locket he discovered there. The locket once held the magical Snakestone, and Zélie knows that if she can find the stone, she might also find her missing father. But a dangerous secret society are equally desperate to get their hands on the Snakestone and its powers. With their lives under threat, Zélie and Jules embark on a desperate hunt for the treasure, facing strange riddles, a mysterious circus, and the miles of murky tunnels that twist beneath the ancient city above...

Our School Review

What our pupils thought

“I loved the character of Jules and how he kept turning out to be so much more than Zelie expected. He was surprisingly brave and courageous and I was delighted when he took up the opportunity of adventure and travel at the end! He really made me think of the phrase- ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover.”

“This book is packed full of adventure, mystery and intrigue. It’s one of those tales which really inspires me as it’s the children who are the only ones who can save the adults! It made me think of Roald Dahl in this way, because his books always have children versus adults, and the children (usually) come out on top!”

“The book used the location of Paris really well and it wasn’t just set in Paris for the sake of it. It used the history of the city and the sewer system well, giving it a context that made sense and worked for this story.”

About the book club:

Our book club consists of children from year 6.

What our educators thought

“I really enjoyed reading this book purely for pleasure initially and it was a joy to share with the children as it is full of unexpected twists and turns that kept them hooked and engaged. The setting of Paris wasn’t just tokenistic and the children and I discussed how it fit with the context of the tale and worked to add a dimension that another setting wouldn’t have done so effectively. It was something that I perhaps wouldn’t have thought of discussing before, but really helped the children to see how cohesion can be built when characters and settings flow and mesh well together too. The characters were relatable for the children and it was ideal having a male and female lead character in the form of Jules and Zelie, as it didn’t disengage either audience. The chapters were not overly long and therefore the children found that they could easily build reading miles by reading multiple chapters at a time at home in between our club sessions in school, and the frequent cliffhangers kept them wanting to read on. All in all, it was an enjoyable tale with plenty of twists and mysterious elements which ended in a way which left the door open for more…”
