‘The Girl Who Couldn’t Lie’ is a fresh, funny story about white lies, brutal honesty and a bangle with special powers by the award-winning journalist and author Radhika Sanghani. 

I had an opportunity to interview Radhika and ask her some questions about this brilliant book, here’s what she had to say:

Tell us about the book

This book is all about Priya, a 12-year-old girl who lies all the time without realising, because she’s trying to keep everyone happy. But when she puts on a bangle that her grandma left her, she suddenly finds she can’t tell a SINGLE lie anymore!

What’s the best lie you’ve told?

I think the best lies have been when I’ve told people I like presents they’ve bought me, because at least then I’m telling a white lie to make them feel better!

Who do you hope will read the book?

I really hope that children similar to Priya read the book – and also any adults like me who accidentally find themselves people-pleasing!

What’s the message you hope young readers will get from the story?

I want young readers to realise that we don’t need to lie. That actually when we tell the truth things get SO much better and we become closer to the people who are meant to be in our lives.

Are any characters in the book a bit like you?

I think there’s a bit of me in every single one! But Priya definitely reminds me of my younger self – except she’s way more talented at gymnastics!

What’s it like being a writer? What are the best and worst bits?

I love being a writer because my job is to make up stories and write them down – it’s so much fun! The best bit is when I get an idea and I’m really excited and buzzing. The worst bit is when I’m trying to edit my work and make it better, and I get really stressed.

What tips do you have for budding young authors?

Write! And also have fun with it! So many people think you have to be really serious to create, but actually, my best work comes when I’m having fun with it!
