Our School Review

What our pupils thought

“This book is very different to any other World War 2 books I have read! If you like spy or detective fiction you will love it. The characters are very interesting and it is fun working out who is good or bad! You learn a lot about refugees who came to Britain during the war and people’s attitudes towards them. It is an exciting book which you leaves you suspecting everyone!”

“My favourite characters in this book are Ned, Anni and Kip. I liked reading about how the paintings were so important to be protected in World War 2 and how they did it. The setting switches between Wales, London and Bletchley Park. It was interesting to think about how we had spies in Britain in World War 2! I haven’t read the first book yet, I Spy, but now I want our book club to read it!”

“I love reading books about World War 2. My favourites were Carrie’s War and Letters from the Lighthouse but this is now my new favourite. Instead of focusing on just the evacuee experience it looked at the jobs that people has to do during the war and how hard it was. It kept me on my toes as there was lots of excitement and I was trying to work out what would happen next and if Ned would succeed in his mission.”

About the book club:

We have two book clubs- a year 5 and a year 6 book club. There are 6 members of our Y6 club who reviewed this book. We meet weekly. We start off with a blooket or kahoot quiz and then discuss what we have read before reading a new chapter!

What our educators thought

“This book and series give a fresh angle to books set in World War 2. We cover detective and historical fiction in our curriculum map and I feel that this would be a great book to cover both! There were lots of themes throughout the book which could be discussed further and can link into modern times. These include disability, refugees and family dynamics. The characters had lots of depth and we discussed how our impressions of them changed over time, especially Harri. There are also links to artists and we looked at some of the work of the artists mentioned in the book. The book can be read to your class for pleasure as part of a World War 2 unit but would also be enjoyable away from this topic. Having other books in the series is brilliant as I have signposted my readers to them. A great read!”
