Our School Review
What our pupils thought
“The story is fantastic as it is based on Ancient Egypt and robberies so it is super exciting and I myself am a fan of Egyptian myths so this is the perfect book for me! My favourite story in the book was The Gold in the Grave, because it was exciting and funny and I wondered whether Paneb would end up locked in the tomb forever (spoiler alert – he didn’t) I would recommend this to my friends and anyone who is interested in history, especially the Egyptians.” (Ayansh, year 4 and Eddie, year 5)
“This book is great! We love the humour throughout the stories. The House of Death story is a brilliant mix of comedy (especially Neria’s brother Karu!) and the truth of Ancient Egypt. We would recommend this book to children in years 3 and 4 as it could be a bit scary for younger readers with all the dead bodies! It shows a range of personality traits in the different characters and the vivid descriptions make you feel as though you are there.” (Winnie and Mariam, year 5)
“I think that this book is very intriguing and adventurous but also hilarious and silly. I loved the story called ‘The Phantom of the Nile’ – the teacher Master Meshwesh was so mean to the children but he got his punishment in the end! It felt a bit like a detective story set in Ancient Egypt so it was different to what I normally read but I really enjoyed it. I loved the description when Ahmose was shown Maiarch’s pond. The detail made it sound very luxurious! I would recommend it to people who like funny and adventurous stories” (Elizabeth, year 5 and Jessica, year 4)
“To put it into words, this book just can’t be put down! Another excellent book by Terry Deary. The brick the size of a house that eventually squashed someone – HILARIOUS!” (Emma, year 6)
“I found this book funny and engaging. I loved how real Egyptian names were used for the characters as they were so unique and different. My favourite story in the book is called ‘The Plot on the Pyramid’. I especially liked the bit when Pere’s tower fell down and he slapped the water and said “naughty”, because it was absolutely hilarious. I also liked how the language used is different to our everyday language. I would recommend this book to people who like short chapter books.” (Poppy, year 4)

What our educators thought
“This was a welcome addition to my Year 3 classroom, having just finished our History topic on the Ancient Egyptians! Once the book club (year 4 – 6) had enjoyed and reviewed the book, I was able to share it with my very excited Year 3 class, who loved hearing the stories and having the background knowledge to fully understand and appreciate them. We read one short story in a reading for pleasure session and used others as part of our whole class reading lessons for a week, giving the children the opportunity to discuss the story in depth and share their opinions. The children absolutely loved it. It had an appropriate level of gore and guts, which the children were used to after learning about the Ancient Egyptians in history! Definitely suitable for lower key stage 2 and very appealing to that age group, with perfect humour, excitement levels and related activity ideas. Due to the planning we already have in place for this half term, I was unable to use it as a stimulus for writing, but this is definitely something I would use this book for in future. It would be an exciting and engaging way for the children to demonstrate their understanding of their learning in history, in a narrative writing unit. But equally, it would be a welcome addition to any classroom book corner – the children in my class have drawn up a waiting list to take a copy home!”
