My favourite part of the story was when they got trapped in a cell and had to try and escape, it was so intense! I couldn’t put the book down!”
“I really enjoyed this book, the suspense built up throughout the story and I was always wondering what would happen next. I specifically got attached to the character Naira. She was a strong character, which I loved! The book was full of mystery, betrayal and gruesome happenings! I loved it!”

What our educators thought
“Our Year 6 reading team loved reading this book and were frequently telling me that they could not put it down! The way the book ended left the children wanting to know more and asking some fascinating questions. It truly opened up some interesting discussions!
The children particularly enjoyed the build up of mystery. The book combined thrill, gruesome creatures with humour fantastically. The children who read the book felt invested in the characters and their relationships with one another. Gus is a fantastic character, with an infectious sense of humour! You feel you truly get to know the characters as the story develops, this is achieved through the dialogue between the characters and the challenges they face together. This formed excellent talking points with the children and allowed them to reflect on dynamics within their own friendship groups. The story is relatable in that it is a group of children going to school everyday however it transports the children into a world of horror and thrilling events.
Other children were thrilled to see this book in school having previously read other books in the series. They were eager to read this one! Many of the children in the reading club said they want to series to continue!
This book also allows for children to explore ambitious vocabulary. The author has included a wealth of interesting word choices to set the scene and ignite children’s imaginations. This allows for children to explore how to create a build up of suspense within their own writing, using descriptive language, as is done so fantastically in this book.
The book includes betrayal, flesh eating caterpillars, murder and discussion of death and would be suitable for children in upper key stage 2 and above.”
