Clive Penguin

What the book club told us about the book:

Clive Penguin is a 32 page picture book that follows the adventure of a penguin who is sick and tired of everything being the same. Clive sets off on an adventure to be someone else, somewhere else. On his way he meets a whale and watches the aurora before bumping into just what he’s been looking for all along. Sliding down the back of the whale Clive finds a pair of bright orange underpants… no! A bright orange backpack.. no! He finds something so versatile and fashionable and just the thing to keep him warm. Maybe a little too warm…

About the book club:

Our book club is made up of 12 year two children who are also our Reading Ambassadors. Clive Penguin was our first book club book. Book club is a chance for children to talk about their current reads and share thoughts on the focus book.

What our educators thought

“I think I enjoyed the book just as much as the children! This book was reviewed by our Year Two Reading Ambassadors (6 and 7 years old) as their first ever book review following the launch of our new Reading Retreat.

The story follows a penguin looking to be somewhere and someone else dreaming of leaving the snow for a hammock in the sunshine. The children particularly loved the way Clive spoke with quote of “same old bloomin’ penguins’ and ‘you’ve gotta be joking’ becoming a firm favourite. The Reading Ambassadors recommended that the Reception children use the book for their penguin topic, suggesting that they could use the illustrations as inspiration for their art. This is definitely something that we are planning to do, especially where Clive Penguin is in the different outfits. T

The illustrator Ben Sanders used a beautiful colour palette to portray the polar night sky including the aurora. The contrast of the bright orange makes for wow moments throughout the book. Staff have been inspired by this, and will be taking the Reading Ambassadors recommendation on board and have already planned art activities based on this for our Reception children.”
