Our School Review
What our pupils thought
“I really enjoyed reading this book in our reading club. I’d give it 5 stars! I was surprised when Mrs Maile got this out instead of a chapter book like we usually read. We all started reading the poems out together straight away! We kept asking to do the book every week. I especially liked the bright colours of the illustrations in the book, they make me want to read more and more of the poems!”
“This book is so cool! I thought poetry was boring, but this book changed my mind. The poems were very funny, and they made me want to learn more about bugs. I especially liked the poem about the dung beetle and shouting DUNG! DUNG! DUNG! out loud! It was so silly! I think this book is perfect for anyone who likes bugs or poetry.”
“I absolutely loved this book! The poems were so funny, they made me laugh out loud. I learned so many new things about bugs and minibeasts, like how ladybirds hibernate in the winter and can sleep in the corner of a window frame. I also liked the Bee poem which was in the shape of a stripy bee, especially as our school symbol is a bee. The pictures were really cool, they made the bugs look so funny, especially the big eyes! I can’t wait to read it again!”
“Wow, this book is awesome! I love bugs and mini beasts, so I was excited when we were reading this book. The poems were really creative, and they taught me a lot about different kinds of bugs. I didn’t know that ants were so clever when they work together, even though some don’t have ears or eyes. The pictures were really colourful, and they made the bugs look cute. I’m going to ask my mum to buy me this book so I can read it whenever I want.”

About the book club:

What our educators thought
“The children absolutely loved BOING! As soon as they came into the group in the morning their faces lit up when they saw the pile of books on the table, and without any prompting they all sat down and spontaneously started reading the first poem (Just Like Bugs) aloud. As a librarian it was such a heartwarming moment.
The book worked really well in the setting (a small, guided reading group designed to build confidence and fluency reading aloud) as the poems lend themselves to being read expressively, and the children were so engrossed by them that they weren’t conscious of their reading aloud. The large text and format is also very accessible.
We read some poems by all reading in unison and for others we took a stanza each. For three weeks the children asked if we could read more poems from the book – and I think they’d keep doing it forever! I have now passed a copy on to each of their class teachers so the group members can share the poems with their classmates.
The facts on each page are brilliant and help tie the book into the curriculum – it’s so much more than just a poetry book! It feels quite unique to have an information book that draws in children in such an engaging and all-encompassing way and helps build so many skills at once. We also talked about various different writing skills which are seen in the different poem types in the book. I would love more books like this – and it had really helped me think outside the box as far as content for reading groups is concerned!”
