Our School Review

What our pupils thought

“I like how funny the book is and the illustrations by Katie Kear and Nick East are really good. They really bring the story to life. The front cover is also really eye catching. I also like all the different personalities of the competitors in the race. They all have reasons to steal the gold. It makes you keep on reading. You are kept guessing till the end of the story.”

“I liked the fun facts at the start of each chapter. They appear random at first but then you discover how they relate to the story. The road signs and information about distance travelled and locations and other info at the start of each chapter was good too. I don’t think I’ve seen that in a book before. So I liked the format of the book.”

“Evie was a great character. She’s funny, confident, reliable and always really positive. I liked how she sneaked into her dad’s boot to get into the race. I also liked seeing how her and her dad’s relationship developed over the course of the book. I can understand why her dad got a bit annoyed with her at times. I liked how she got closer to her dad as they discussed her brother Timmy. The other characters were good too, all different with their own personalities.”

“I liked how the story starts on the cliff with the car and flashback over the whole race. The challenges were really good. So it wasn’t just a race, the challenges added something extra. The paddling pool one made me laugh and so did the others. They were very original. I also liked how you get to see the scoreboard as you go through the story and the race wasn’t just about driving but the challenges too.”

About the book club:

Our Book Club is called The Reading Rockers. We have 5 pupils in the group plus one teacher, Mr Clark. We have 2 Primary 7 pupils and 2 Primary 6 pupils. Pupils were asked to volunteer for who would like to be in the club from each class and names were chosen at random. We meet every week on a Friday lunchtime to discuss what we have read and set pages for the following week.

What our educators thought

“I thought this was a really entertaining, easy read and I thoroughly enjoyed it as much as the children. Jenny Pearson’s books have such a lot of heart. She writes very well for children, managing to write about a sensitive subject at the level of the reader (illness and passing away of sibling, adult grief), in amongst all the action and humour. The story was such good fun, exciting, mysterious, easy to read and ripe for discussion. The pupils enjoyed discussing what they had read, what they liked and where they thought the story might go next. The illustrations and chapter format broke up the story nicely and the pupils really enjoyed the cartoony format. I’d say the book is for P5 pupils upwards. It’s a very good choice for a book group, owing to the format, funny and exciting content and illustrations. Pupils were enthusiastic about the book and it generated lots of great discussion each week.”
