Our School Review

What our pupils thought

“I really like how it’s a graphic novel. It’s a very funny book and the illustrations are colourful. I liked how the story develops. It made me laugh when it said: I was just breathing through my bum hole.”

“The book is funny and interesting and there is a lot to look at in the pictures on every page. You need to take time to look at all the details. I enjoyed drawing the characters using the how to draw page at the back of the book.”

“At first I didn’t think that it would be my kind of book, but as we read more I really liked it and it made me laugh. I’ve enjoyed sharing the story at book club.”

“I like the book as it’s really funny. I love the pictures. I think it’s a good book for people who don’t like lots of words to read. I like the animal characters and the fact that the animals can talk. It has three mini books in one. The giant gnome was fun and I enjoyed reading about the zombie cactuses.”

“I really like the book and all the characters. It’s funny and the the dog keeps on farting!”

About the book club:

Our book club is for children in Y5/6 and we meet every Wednesday lunchtime in our library. In the summer we will read outside in our nature garden.

What our educators thought

“At first I was unsure as to whether or not I would enjoy this book as much as the children in my book club. Graphic novels are extremely popular at our school but I have not been tempted to read one so far, so when we were asked to review Chicken Hill I was a little sceptical. However, once we started reading, I soon got drawn into the story and enjoyed the humour. The characters are entertaining and Gripper farting his way through the whole book did make me laugh, but that may not appeal to every adult! I liked the fact that there were three mini adventures as we read one each week in book club. The children really enjoyed it and couldn’t wait for the next session to find out what would happen next. The colour illustrations are brilliant and are so detailed; sometimes we had to pause reading just to take every bit in. It’s an easy read and would be suitable for Y3 upwards. Once we’d finished reading, the children were excited to use the ‘how to draw’ section at the back of the book and produced some excellent sketches. I really enjoyed sharing the book with my book club, and it may just have changed my opinion on graphic novels.”
